Mencken is often credited with this quote, though the quote actually seems to be a bastardization of this quote that first appeared in the New York Evening Mail on 16 November 1917: “Explanations exist; they have existed for all time; there is always a well-known solution to every human problem — neat, plausible, and wrong.”
